TEXT.John 17:5-8

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

This is a wonderful chapter & one of the main high points of the entire book of John.

Here we find Jesus praying for us.We get a glimpse of His Ministry as He prays for our sanctification, glorification, and preservation.
The hour for which He came to earth has arrived. He has finished what He came to do.
He continues His prayer, revealing more insights about Himself and us.
Jesus asked that His glory be resumed that He enjoyed before the universe was spoken into existence.
This verse proves the pre-existence of Jesus before the creation of the world.
John 1:1—In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 6:38—For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
John 8:58—Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
What Was Jesus Doing Before His Birth in Bethlehem?
1. He Created the Universe
2. He was Communing with His Heavenly Father
3. He was Choosing to Bless those Who Would Believe in Him and Use those Believers for His Service
Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love
Salvation is not referred to in this verse. God does not choose some to be saved & some to be lost. That would be unjust and it is also unscriptural.
He has chosen before the foundation of the world those who freely put their faith in the Lord Jesus to stand before Christ in love, holiness, and without
blame. He has chosen us to serve Him.
4. He was Constructing or Preparing His Kingdom
5. He was on the Course in Becoming our Savior.
Long before the first Adam failed in the Garden of Eden, the second Adam, Jesus, was preparing for the cross of Calvary
From the start of history, He was telling us, “I love you.” When Jesus was suspended between Heaven & Hell on the cross, He was showing us His love for
us.
When He comes again and gives us a new, glorified body, an inheritance,  He will say, “I told you I loved you.”
Jesus had us on His heart before we were ever born.
Verse 6: The word translated manifested means to make… known what has been hidden or unknown. This speaks of Christ teaching, of schooling others.
The subject of the schooling. Your name: The name indicates all things about God.
It refers to His quality, to His character, and His works.
A right knowledge of God the Father was the first thing which Christ revealed & taught to His disciples.
This mankind needs to know more about this subject than any thing else.
The students in the schooling. To the ones— You gave Me:
This was a great privilege for the disciples. The disciples walked closer to Christ than anyone else.
If you want to learn more spiritually, it will require that you have good fellowship with Christ.
All believers do not experience or enjoy the same spiritual illumination. Most of that has to do with how devoted they are to Jesus.
Verse 7: Wonder what the disciples though about all this. Did their eyes open in wonder at such amazing truths?
Once they had said to him, “Teach us to pray.” Were they all ears now, hanging on every word, treasuring up each precious moment?
John evidently was. But what about the others? Were they already griping & making excuses because they were tired after this long hard day?
They knew that Jesus was the very embodiment & revelation of God.
There is one thing we must realize here; Jesus was looking ahead beyond the resurrection in saying these things.
It would be the resurrection that would confirm all He had been saying to them. The resurrection would change their minds & life forever.
That’s why they would keep Gods word forever.
Verse 8: They received the Word. Which means the disciples respected the Word of God and gave attention to it.
They obeyed the Word. Much is involved in this word translated “kept.”
Obedience is one matter that is prominently involved. Some just read the Scriptures, but these disciples obeyed them.
They believed in Christ. The disciples were in a minority, but it was a most commendable minority, for they believed in Christ.
Whether or not a person believes in Jesus determines their eternal destiny.
The disciples had grown in spiritual knowledge. They knew things that even the religious leaders of their day were totally ignorant about, and this was
because the disciples were devoted to Christ unlike the religious leaders who despised Him.
The disciples honored Christ.
When we receive and obey the Word and believe in Christ, we will indeed honor Him.
Those who reject the Word, do not obey it, and do not believe in Christ do not honor Him.
When Jesus said I came forth from You.
Did Pilate believe that? Or Caiaphas? Or Herod Antipas? Not for a moment.
Did Gamaliel the teacher of young Saul of Tarsus? Did Caesar on his throne believe that?
Or Philo, the renowned teacher of Alexandria? Did the scholars on Mars Hill in Athens believe it? Not for a moment. But it was true.
Peter, James, John, and the others believed it.
The world is full of unbelief today about Jesus
But there are some who still truly believe that these word we study now came directly from God.
Jesus is the word & He is God.
The only way our thirsty soul can every reach heaven is to rejoice in what Jesus has done & is doing for & through us.
Christ has given us the greatest opportunity in the world & that is to prove that we love & serve Him.
Only through the life saving words that He shares do we come to know the Father.
And one day we shall be as He is in Christ
